The following short story was first posted in Success Magazine in 1900 and is by Frederick Van Rensselaer Dey. It is actually in two parts – the first is how a starving artist found the story in an old book and immediately turned his life around. The second part is the story itself.
It is one of my favourites because it talks about how we should not ask permission to perform. We should be confident and reach out our hands for the things we need and want, not go through life as beggars. The central idea is that there is a positive and negative side of our characters and that we can embrace the positive side and live a life of achievement and success and not the mediocrity and failure that happens when we live by default based on our “dark” side.
