Subversive tip – Become a Perpetual Traveller (PT)
A Perpetual Traveller (or PT for short) is someone who travels freely throughout the world, never being tied down to one spot. Read on to find out more about why this is a good idea and how you can become a Perpetual Traveller.
PTs move out of their home country to avoid taxation, lawsuits, military service, government repression and stagnation. They travel from country to country, not remaining in one place long enough to be considered a permanent resident. For most countries, but not the United States, taxation ceases once you permanently leave the country (the United States does give a generous tax free limit for non-residents).
As governments become more and more heavy-handed with their citizens, the PT idea is becoming increasingly attractive.
In the countries that they are in, PTs are tourists. As long as they stay away from trouble by not breaking any local laws, they are exempt from taxation and military service. As tourists, they are likely to be treated more favourably than local people.
If you have trouble such as a difficulties with a neighbour, the PT simply moves to a more friendly place and does not get involved in troubles and lawsuits.
A PT still may have a base, but they use the concept called Six Flags. Rather than just having one “flag” in one country like most people, the PT aims to have all these flags (often in different countries):
- Citizenship flag – you need to be a citizen of at least one country. This country must put no serious restrictions on you as a citizen.
- Residence haven flag – this is the country where you officially live.
- Playground flag – this is the place that you choose to live on a day-to-day basis. Generally it should be a place that offers a good way of life and personal freedom.
- Business base flag – this is where you earn your money. It needs to be a business friendly jurisdiction.
- Asset haven flag – this is where you keep your money, safely away from risks and confiscation.
- Internet haven flag – this is where your emails and websites reside, away from any snoops or those who would want to seize your data.
You become a PT by adopting this as a lifestyle and leaving your current home and life. Most PTs sell up their assets and plan the move in advance.
A wealthy person can easily set themselves up as a PT, and many already do, but those who are less well off and unable to live off their money and investment need a portable occupation. This is a skill that you can easily use anywhere in the world, or a business that can be run through a laptop. At one end of the spectrum, jobs like hairdressers are portable, at the other, an investment manager can work anywhere in the world where there is an Internet connection.
This article only touches the surface of being a PT, but there are a few good books on this subject (see the review of Bye Bye Big Brother for one good book).
