How To Not Be a Sheep
Thousands of years ago, man moved from being a hunter / gatherer to a farmer. Some farmers realised that they could herd previously wild animals like sheep. Sheep are compliant, so the entire herd will do as directed. All the better to have fresh meat readily available.
Around the same time, someone realised that they could do the same thing with people. The initial promise was protection and to have all the hard decisions made by the priests and kings. In return, the ordinary person gave up any real freedom or autonomy and had to contribute much of their crops to support the growing bureaucracy.
Now it is the 21st century, but not much has changed. The priests and kings are now the self appointed “experts” we find in business and government. We don’t pay for “protection” and “leadership” in bushels of wheat now – for most people, the money is taken from them before they even see it.
The masses get their guidance from “gurus” or church leaders who often fleece the flock – wolves who make their livings, not from producing anything of value, but by leaching off what others produce.
Of course, leadership, protection and guidance is largely illusory. The person who speaks up the loudest and who has the greatest desire for power becomes the leader, not the most capable person. The person who is thinks independently sees it for what it is – more herding of the sheep by the wolves.
Most people are happy to be a sheep and accept herding, but some people wake up and begin to rail against the system and openly rebel. Both responses are simplistic in that they don’t achieve the goal of freedom and independence. The protruding nail is hammered flat. Whilst Western governments give the illusion of allowing diversity of opinion, anything that potentially rocks them to the core is flattened. Token protests for unimportant issues are allowed and even encouraged as a diversionary technique. The sheep are allowed to jump around a bit just outside of the slaughterhouse.
The more appropriate response is to understand that the system is a prison for the mind, and to start thinking differently to a sheep. It is not necessary to change the world, just yourself. It is a matter of refusing to play the sheep game anymore. The non-sheep person will refuse to be accept accepted wisdom and will be open to new and more productive ways of thinking. If the sheep is the person who will allow himself to be financially robbed, and is told what to think, the non-sheep prospers and thinks for himself.
