A message for our time – The Ten “Cannots”
We live in an age where many people think that government should constantly intervene in the free market – to bail out banks, to rescue car companies, to “make things better” by taking our money away in taxation. This is not a new idea and the fact that it doesn’t work isn’t new either. Read on to read the 10 Cannots, timeless truths that William J.H. Boetcker identified back in 1916:
- You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
- You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
- You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
- You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
- You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
- You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
- You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
- You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
- You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence.
- And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.
Our current system does nearly everything the opposite to the 10 Cannots. Government taxes heavily, in fact so heavily (directly and indirectly) that most families struggle to survive, even with both husband and wife working. Deficit spending is seen as a fact of life, and inflation (the steady destruction of buying power) is seen as desirable.
Whilst the wealthy pay the majority of taxes and provide employment for many, society vilifies them as greedy and selfish. If you are wealthy, you are fair game in the courts, even if the case has no merit.
Government holds itself to be our protectors, when the truth is that no thief could ever take so much away and leave so little as government does. At the same time, if you hold your hand open and do nothing but waste time, chances are that you will gain from government.
The Tea Party movement can see what is happening, and the clear message is for governments to return to their rightful place and cut spending and theft of wealth through taxation and excessive regulation. Anyone who works does not want to be slaving for government and others, they want to work for their own families.
I’d look forward to your comments on this.
