How to be Lucky
Why does it seem like some people can’t help but be lucky? Everything seems to go their way. If they are out of work, an even better job comes along quickly. They seem to get the good investment opportunities. They always “fall on their feet”.
Why do other people seem to be so unlucky? They seem to miss out on all the breaks and get stuck in a rut. If there is something good happening, they are left out of it.
This posting discusses luck, and how you can become a lucky person.Firstly, there is no such thing as luck as a natural force – luck is based on our perception. Luck is what the human mind uses to rationalise the random events that we are all faced with every day. As the Bible says, time and chance happen to us all. We are all faced with good and bad random events – whether they are lucky or not is based on our state of mind.
Each person has a part of their mind called the Reticular Activating System, or RAS for short, which identifies useful patterns in our environment. The RAS enables us to focus on items of interest, in the same way that a TV tuner allows us to pick channels out of the static around them.
The lucky person has a RAS that identifies events that are useful to them so that they can be acted on positively. The unlucky person will not find these events, or act upon them. For example, a lucky person may notice an investment opportunity based on an article in the daily paper and be able to act on it. The unlucky person will read the same newspaper and not notice it.
The unlucky person may be given opportunities, but unconsciously sabotage themselves. I have seen this when an unlucky person is provided with a job – they start doing it, then suddenly become sick or have an accident and are unable to stay with the job. This doesn’t just happen once – it becomes a repeating pattern. Their mind is causing their bad luck.
So, how can you become lucky? There are two parts to it. Firstly you need to perceive rather than just see. Many people can see, but true perception and understanding is rare. Secondly you need to be confident enough to act on opportunities rather than simply procrastinate.
You can learn to perceive by actively living life, and looking at what is behind it rather than living your life based on what you have been taught and believing whatever you see on TV. You need to go around without the shutters over your eyes.
Confidence comes from faith in your own judgement. Once you trust your judgement, you are confident to act on it.
This comes from developing knowledge and thinking skills. If you wanted to build up your body, you go to a gym. When you stress the muscles by working them harder than usual, they become stronger. If you want to build up your thinking skills, you need to stress your mind by using it a bit more. That means reading new books, watching new movies and learning new skills.
So good and bad luck is really in your perception and attitude. The person who has good luck expects to see good things happening to them, and they actively search out opportunities for themselves. The person with bad luck doesn’t trust their own mind. They tend to push away anything good that comes their way.
